About Chapter One

A solid – experienced background.

There are now five Chapter One Childcare nurseries and we have been providing a warm, nurturing and challenging environment for children and babies in Edinburgh and North Yorkshire for nearly ten years.

Diane     Jon

Diane and Jon Gillam are the owners. Diane has over 38 years experience in the childcare sector. As well as setting up and running many successful nurseries, she has undertaken specialist roles as a maternity support care nurse and worked extensively with young people with additional support needs. Diane is Head of Management and Staff Development, Jon is head of finance and heads Business Development.

In 2004, Chapter One Childcare came to Edinburgh and by sticking to the key principles of providing caring, understanding and stimulating environments with a strong focus on investing and developing our staff, we have earned the reputation of being one of the best childcare groups, backed up by exemplary inspection reports. We have retained good quality staff that have shown commitment and have worked as part of the team to raise standards and practice for the benefit of our children. Our staff show commitment, understanding, patience and the highest standard of care.

We currently have six nursery settings, one in England, and five in Edinburgh including one outdoor setting and have a staff team of 56.

Our Mission Statement

Chapter One Childcare has a strong commitment to providing the highest standards of care and learning in a stimulating and supportive environment. Our nurseries provide children with a safe, secure and happy place in which they can play grow and learn. We strive to encourage, support and challenge children in their learning journey, while continuing to meet the needs of each individual child and family. Don’t be afraid to explain what makes you different, what you strive to do that others don’t. The foundation of our business is the people who work for us and our commitment is continuous professional development for all staff. Our mentoring and supervision of staff is at the highest level to ensure that the best care and learning is delivered!

Providing the highest standards

It’s not easy choosing a nursery for your child, but taking a look at the results of government inspection reports is one great way to see how the experts think we’re doing. Our inspection reports show that we work within government guidelines to ensure that all our nurseries provide the best possible environments for children, families and staff. This is something we take great pride in and we will continue to develop, to ensure that we continue to do our best for the children in our care and the parents who place great trust in us as professionals.

Statements can be written, but we strongly believe in “the proof of the pudding……”. We are successful, proud and ambitious. We embrace change for the welfare of all and there is no place for complacency, or second best!!

Parents as Partners

Parents, carers and families are by far the most important influences in a child’s life. Their support can play a vital role at all stages of education.

Why we like our parents to be involved?

Parents who take on a supportive role in their child’s learning make a difference in improving achievement and behaviour. The active involvement of parents in the life of the nursery can help promote a learning community in which children can engage positively with nursery staff and their peers.

Consultation with children and parents is on-going – it matters what you say – it matters what you think – your views and inputs are a valuable tool to us.

Children can benefit from developing positive partnerships with parents by involving them in all decisions affecting their child’s education and learning. Engaging with parents gives them the chance to understand the role that they play in their child’s learning and development and fosters parental involvement.

Having parents as our partners is designed to maximise the benefits of nursery life, extend learning between nursery and home and to give opportunity for parents to get involved and have their say.
